 1. Summary

This week I read about the development of digital computers and networks in encyclopedias. The author explores the impact of the digital age on encyclopedic creation and knowledge sharing. It begins with a review of the vision of the first half of the twentieth century for the General Encyclopedia, including the idea of cooperation between Outlet and Wells and Bush's vision of technology and peace. The article then mentions the emergence of hypertext and digital networks, such as Nelson's Xanadu project and Project Gutenberg, which laid the foundation for the development of digital encyclopedias.and the plight of encyclopedias in the digital age, and the challenges faced by projects such as Wikipedia in the face of copyright, trademark and other issues.

2. Interesting Point

I think the most interesting part of the reading is the description of Project Gutenberg. The project demonstrates the early concepts of hypertext and interactive multimedia systems, while Project Gutenberg demonstrates the significance of digital print and free e-books.With a mission to provide free e-books, Project Gutenberg provides people with access to online opportunities by digitizing printed information already available.Michael Hart, the creator of the project, began by typing the Declaration of Independence into a computer, a simple act that culminated in a vast digital library. And it's interesting to see how individual actions can change the dynamics of an entire region.

3.Question

I have a doubt after reading this part of the article. Why did the digital encyclopedia take so long?Despite the emergence of new technologies such as computer networks in the second half of the twentieth century, this vision was not realized until Wikipedia emerged. The article mentions factors such as technical utility, vision coherence, and contingency, but there is still no clear answer. It makes me wonder what complex interactions exist between technological advances and social needs in the digital age, and why some visions are realized at some point and delayed or hindered at others.

Comments

  1. The concept of a digital encyclopedia has evolved alongside the development of the internet. Prior to its emergence, paper encyclopedias sufficed, which is why the transition to digital formats was relatively slow. Additionally, the quality of paper encyclopedias was high, leading to a lack of perceived necessity for digital versions.

  2. In order for a digital encyclopedia to spread, it takes a lot more time to collect than we know. I think the birth of a digital encyclopedia took a long time because this process takes a lot of time.
