From my review of the Wikipedia Manual of Style (MoS), I've learned several key principles that are essential for maintaining the quality and consistency of articles: 1. Consistency:It is crucial to keep the style and formatting uniform within a single article and as consistent as possible across different articles. This helps create a seamless reading experience for users.     2. Stability:We should avoid making changes to an article’s style just for the sake of change. Any modifications from one guideline-defined style to another should have a compelling reason, ensuring that articles remain stable over time.     3. Clarity:The primary goal is to enhance the readability of the encyclopedia. This involves careful attention to wording, layout, formatting, and the inclusion of clear diagrams, making it easier for readers to understand the content.     4. Referencing:It’s important to provide reliable sources for the information presented. This allows readers...

Summary: Wikipedia's "Did you know" (DYK) section on the Main Page showcases new or significantly expanded articles that meet specific criteria. It aims to highlight diverse content, encourage editor participation, and demonstrate continuous improvement in Wikipedia's articles. DYK features interesting facts ("hooks") linked to selected articles, promoting engagement and recruitment of new editors. Question: How does the DYK section on Wikipedia's Main Page contribute to the site's mission of providing diverse and continually updated knowledge, and how does it support the community of Wikipedia editors?

Summary: A category page on Wikipedia serves as a repository for organizing and listing related articles and media files. It consists of sections displaying subcategories, pages, and media files within that category. The content of these sections is automatically generated based on the categorization of pages. Category pages can be edited like regular pages, and they display a limited number of items with options for expanding lists. Categories facilitate navigation and organization across Wikipedia's vast content. Question: How does the automatic categorization and display system of Wikipedia's category pages enhance user navigation and content organization within the encyclopedia?

To write a great Wikipedia article, start by using Wikipedia's search engine to find related materials and create links to and from other relevant articles. Conduct additional research using reliable sources, such as books and peer-reviewed journals, and consider visiting libraries or using online databases like Google Scholar and JSTOR. Begin your article with a concise lead section, define the topic, and establish context. Ensure the article remains neutral, well-referenced, and free of personal comments. Use appropriate section headings, add relevant images, and engage with other editors for feedback. Finally, create links to your article from related topics and seek peer reviews to refine the content. 1. How can the balance between academic rigor and accessibility be maintained when selecting sources for a Wikipedia article? 2. How can fairness and multiple perspectives be ensured in Wikipedia articles on controversial topics?

Wikipedia is appearing more and more frequently in TV dramas and in life. It reflects the impact of the information age on us. We live in an era of information explosion, and Wikipedia has become one of our main ways to obtain knowledge.  Interestingly, Wikipedia's frequent appearance in TV dramas and art is not only a reflection of real life but also a cultural symbol. It is often used in plots to showcase modern people's ability to rapidly access and share information, as well as their thirst for knowledge. This portrayal of Wikipedia can be both a humorous element and a profound observation of contemporary society.  However, this also raises a question: Are we overly reliant on Wikipedia? In this age of information overload, we need to cultivate critical thinking and information literacy to better handle this information.

Summary: Wikipedia articles are built on reliable, published sources to ensure neutrality and accuracy. All significant viewpoints from these sources must be included. The Verifiability policy mandates inline citations for challenged or potentially contentious material, especially in biographies of living persons. If no reliable sources exist for a topic, Wikipedia does not host an article on it. In cases of conflict, sourcing policies take precedence over guidelines. Question: How does Wikipedia's policy on verifiability and reliable sourcing contribute to maintaining the integrity and trustworthiness of its content, particularly in contentious areas like biographies of living persons?

Reading "Good Faith Collaboration: The Culture of Wikipedia" has left me with many insights. The reason Wikipedia has become such a valuable knowledge resource is because it relies on the integrity and collaboration of thousands of volunteers globally. This book made me realize that collective effort and trust are key to creating and maintaining this open platform. One of the most intriguing points is that the content on Wikipedia is created and maintained by volunteer editors. This means that each of us has the opportunity to contribute to one of the largest online encyclopedias in the world. This openness and inclusivity are impressive and are the essence of the culture on Wikipedia. Through participating in Wikipedia, I have come to understand the importance of sharing knowledge in the Internet age. On this platform, everyone has a responsibility to ensure the accuracy and objectivity of information. This culture of integrity and collaboration is something worth learning f...

Wikipedia's journey has been full of twists and turns and challenges. However, it also exemplifies the reflective character of the open content community and its adherence to the code of goodwill. Despite concerns about quality, community, and culture, Wikipedia continues to evolve in response to difficulties and challenges in its development. The text also refers to the concept of "wikientrepreneurs" who prefer to enjoy a fast and flexible environment in a small community rather than being tied down by bureaucracy. Max Weber's idea of the evolution of organizations into bureaucratic forms is strikingly similar to the evolution of Wikipedia, and the concept of "branching" is given a new interpretation here. Discussion:What ethical considerations arise from the use of Wikipedia as a primary or sole source of information in academic and professional settings? How does Wikipedia navigate the tension between maintaining a free and open platform and protecting a...

First, it emphasizes the importance of a collaborative culture of community, arguing that the key to understanding Wikipedia is to appreciate its community and collaborative culture. Second, the text points out that while Wikipedia strives for an idealized universal encyclopedia, community members must face a variety of real-world challenges, including personality clashes, philosophical differences, and external threats. A good leader plays a guiding, mediating, and defensive role in the community. However, leaders also need to be careful with their use of power to avoid abuse and controversy. These insights have given me a deep understanding that a culture of good leadership and collaboration is key to sustaining the functioning and growth of an open and complex community. Discussion: If you are a leader, is there anything you want to change in the details?

In the Open Conundrum, the author explores the challenges and dilemmas faced by Wikipedia as an open content community. The article points out the advantages and disadvantages of Wikipedia's openness and calls for a deeper understanding and discussion of the concept of openness. The authors begin by citing several "laws" about Wikipedia's openness, highlighting the potential for problem users to drive out good users and the role of malicious users in incentivizing good editors. This leads to a discussion of the dilemma of openness, whether it promotes better community participation and contribution, or whether it leads to abuse and confusion. The paper further explores the concept of openness, and points out that in today's context, "openness" has become a popular word, used to modify various concepts, but there is confusion and misunderstanding about its exact meaning. The author emphasizes the inevitability of structure in social relations and gives e...

How to make sure content you add to Wikipedia is not a copyright violation? We all know it's bad if the content we've spent time and effort to find is infringing. First understand the legal definition of infringement, in order to know what to do. When reprinting the content of others, it is necessary to be authorized, to avoid reprinting information of unknown sources, and not to tamper with others' works at will. It is best to indicate contact information and sources.

W1.1 Intro class: intro to class, blog, wiki and other assignments—TIANXIAOYU

1.Summary I got my first taste of Wikipedia because of professor. Because last semester left some regrets, so this semester more want to learn Wikipedia related courses. I have learned a lot about Wikipedia in last year's study, and I can use the functions of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is very interesting to me, I feel more and more proficient in the process of editing Wikipedia, I am happy that I seem to have gradually mastered a skill, which makes me want to know more about this course. 2.Interesting points I think the most interesting thing about editing Wikipedia is the sense of accomplishment. People will play different roles in the society, for example, a teacher is the role of imparting knowledge, I always think a teacher is a good career, but ordinary people can not convey knowledge to others? Wikipedia gives everyone a chance to convey knowledge to others. 3.Discussion If all knowledge is spread selflessly, is it necessarily a good thing?

Wikipedia as more than an online encyclopedia; it is an active community engaged in continuous conversation. Unlike traditional reference works, Wikipedia's content is a snapshot of ongoing collaborative efforts and discussions. The community emphasizes a "good faith" collaborative culture, illustrated by instances where even controversial topics like neo-Nazi attacks are handled with civility. Wikipedia's vision of universal access to knowledge ties back to early 20th-century projects like Paul Otlet's Universal Repertory and H.G. Wells's World Brain, aiming to foster unity through shared information. Wikipedia's development is influenced by the principles of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), promoting open collaboration. The platform combines the flexibility of wikis with encyclopedic rigor, allowing easy content creation and editing. Despite challenges, Wikipedia has grown significantly, with millions of articles in numerous languages, and continue...
