What did I learn while editing Wikipedia?   In the process of editing Wikipedia, I learned how to edit correctly, became an honest Wikipedia volunteer, and mastered editing skills. This includes searching and verifying reliable sources of information, adhering to the principle of neutrality, and adhering to Wikipedia's editorial rules and community guidelines. In addition, I have learned how to effectively communicate and collaborate with other editors, ways to resolve editing conflicts, and how to use various tools and templates from Wikipedia to improve editing efficiency and item quality. Through this process, I deeply appreciate the importance of knowledge sharing and cooperation, and feel a sense of achievement and responsibility in participating in the construction of a global knowledge base. How is this assignment different from more traditional student assignments?   This assignment is significantly different from traditional assignments. The typical assignment is to w...

Summary    The effective operation of the DYK project relies on a series of complex rules and processes, including continuous discussions, carefully selected nominations, centrally managed preparation areas, strict queue management, rotation strategies adjusted according to needs, regularly updated templates, timely error reports, and active participation and supervision by administrators. These components work together to ensure the smooth operation of the DYK project and provide strong support and promotion for the content contribution of Wikipedia. Interesting point   I think the interesting aspect of the DYK project is that it is not only a platform for showcasing new articles, but also a full manifestation of community participation and collaboration. In this project, editors work together to drive the continuous development of Wikipedia through activities such as nomination, discussion, review, and error reporting. DYK's rotation strategy ensures that the hook up co...

Summary   The purpose of Wikipedia's classification guide is to help users and volunteers better organize and search for content. To create a new classification, first confirm if it is truly necessary to avoid duplication and over classification. The name of the classification should be neutral and clear, and it is best to directly explain the content it contains. Each category page should have clear instructions to help users and editors understand the standards for that category. Classification should be organized in a tree structure, from broad to specific. Large classifications can be managed using a directory or subcategory tree, making it easier for users to browse and find the items they need Interesting point   I think the interesting point is that it not only organizes articles, but also facilitates users to discover and explore related topics. Improve user browsing experience. Discussion How to avoid articles being over classified?

Summary    Once an image is published on Wikimedia Commons and a specific license is selected, the selection cannot be revoked. Although Commons uses the same engine as other Wikimedia websites, it has different page types. The uploaded images should have high resolution, but excessively large images may cause extended rendering time or memory issues. You can directly use images on Wikimedia Commons in Wikipedia by linking to the file name. Interesting point    Once a specific license is selected, it cannot be changed. This demonstrates the importance of license selection. Furthermore, it is interesting to learn that although the same engine is used, the page types of Commons are different. Discussion     What are the unique features of Commons compared to other Wikimedia websites?

Assignment2(5.10) — WANG YIHUA

Should AI be used to create Wikipedia articis?   I think AI can be used on Wikipedia, but I believe it should be used correctly. When using artificial intelligence to create Wikipedia articles, although AI can quickly process a large amount of information, the generated content may have errors or inaccuracies, requiring manual intervention for editing, review, and revision. And Kniper has said that this can be a very useful tool for overcoming writer barriers. This can allow some people with poor word order to write their ideal articles. So I think AI can be used to create Wikipedia.

Assignment1(5.10) — WANG YIHUA

When you search for information, do you prefer to use AI or Wikipedia? Why?     Searching on Wikipedia is to check if the information I want to search for exists and to obtain a relatively reliable starting point. Wikipedia usually provides information from around the world, and other Wikipedia volunteers also cite other sources, which allows me to further trace the source and reliability of information. Although AI search engines can provide a wider range of search results, Wikipedia often provides greater assurance in terms of content accuracy and credibility. Moreover, the content of Wikipedia is usually reviewed by administrators, while AI search results may be influenced by algorithmic preferences or misunderstandings. Therefore, when accurate and reliable information is needed, I prefer to use Wikipedia.

Summary   Remix culture is a unique cultural phenomenon in the digital age, which is based on the re conception and reorganization of existing art, music, or literary materials, creating new forms of works. With the support of digital technology, such as sampling, mixing, and rearrangement, creators can showcase their ideas and creativity in innovative ways. Interesting point   Through Remix culture, people can integrate and intersect ideas and expressions from different cultures, forming a new mode of cultural exchange. This cross-cultural exchange not only promotes the diversity and richness of artistic works, but also helps to enhance people's understanding and respect for other cultures, thereby promoting global cultural diversity and exchange. Discussion    How does Remix culture promote cross-cultural communication and understanding?

Summary    Wikipedia has played a role in many art works and online cultures, such as the Wikipedia Monument in Poland, the songs "White&Nerdy" and "Wikipedia Song", and online comics. This reflects the popularity and influence of Wikipedia in society, as well as people's love and recognition of it. Interesting point   Jankovic's teasing of Atlantic Records in the music video is a humorous response and shows his joking attitude towards the authority. The imitation of Wikipedia's writing style in online comics is also an interesting interaction that brings the characteristics of Wikipedia into the field of online entertainment. Discussion     Does Yankovic's destruction of Atlantic Records' Wikipedia page in the White&Nerdy music video spark public discussion about Wikipedia?

W8.1 April 22 — WANG YIHUA

Summary   Wikipedia emphasizes the importance of using reliable sources to support article content. It provides guidelines on how to determine reliable sources, including the type of source, situational dependence of reliability assessment, and specific recommendations for academic content and news reporting. We also discussed the use of sources of bias and the handling of translation and reprinting sources. Finally, the handling of materials without a source was mentioned, emphasizing the cautious handling of negative information about survivors. Interesting point    I think one interesting point is about how to deal with biased sources. Although some sources may have biases, they can still be considered reliable sources in specific circumstances. Editors need to consider some standards when using these biased sources, such as editorial control, past factual verification records, and independence of reporting themes. This indicates that Wikipedia is not one size fits all...

Summary    Wikipedia's success has always been a subject of controversy, much like an ongoing family debate. Its founders have differing opinions about it, akin to how family members always have their own perspectives. Yet the Wikipedia community has consistently engaged in thoughtful introspection and discussions about its identity and modus operandi, akin to a group of close friends collectively pondering the future. Despite past predictions of its failure, Wikipedia remains one of the closest realizations of the universal encyclopedia vision. Even in its most challenging times, its content remains a valuable resource for us. While its success may not be flawless, it undeniably inspires us to pursue knowledge and collaboration. Interesting point   I find the most intriguing aspect of the article is its emphasis on the importance of Wikipedia's culture and community for its success, as well as their resilience in the face of challenges. This highlights Wikipedia's uniqu...

Summary   Among leaders in open-content communities, particularly Wikipedia's founder Jimmy Wales, is highlighted. Despite being dubbed a "benevolent dictator," Wales isn't keen on the label. The challenges faced by such community leaders are outlined, including power distribution, decision-making, disciplinary issues, and handling malicious behavior. While authoritative leadership is sometimes necessary, concerns about potential abuse of power exist. Hence, alternative leadership models like constitutional monarchs or the most trusted political parties are suggested. Wales is cautious about his role and title, aiming to avoid misunderstanding. Interesting point   I think the interesting part is how they talked about leaders in open-content communities, especially like Wikipedia, where Jimmy Wales is called "the benevolent dictator." It sounds kind of dramatic and ironic, emphasizing how leaders need to balance power and responsibility. And, Jimmy Wales hi...

Summary   The Wikipedia community is an open place where everyone participates in discussions and collaboration. It emphasizes the importance of openness, highlighting certain characteristics such as open content, transparent processes, fair treatment for all, and avoiding interference in others' activities. The author also mentions the history of the free software movement, illustrating the development of open content and Wikipedia's role within it. Overall, Wikipedia is a typical open community, demonstrating the importance and value of openness in practice. Interesting point    The challenge facing Wikipedia lies in striking a balance between the openness of allowing anyone to edit and the need to prevent abuse. While Wikipedia is open, it does not tolerate persistent disruptive behavior. The goal of Wikipedia is to produce a high-quality encyclopedia, which sometimes necessitates additional technical interventions to address harmful openness. While some may arg...

W3.1 March 18 — WANG YIHUA

Summary   The founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, had a really cool dream: to create a global encyclopedia that anyone could freely access, read, and edit. He envisioned schools worldwide having easy access to this encyclopedia without worrying about expensive internet costs. This idea resonates with the ideals of the Enlightenment movement, aiming to spread knowledge, facilitate international exchange, and promote individual participation in discussions. Although creating such a global encyclopedia was challenging, Wikipedia's mission has always been to enable people worldwide to freely access and share knowledge, thanks to advancements in technology. Wales believed that technology could bring people closer together, thereby promoting world peace, authenticity, and understanding. Interesting point   The founders of Wikipedia have always been steadfast in their commitment to this dream. Despite the considerable time it took to realize such a comprehensive encyclopedia, they per...

How to make sure content you add to Wikipedia is not a copyright violation? — WANG YIHUA

Summary   To ensure that the content I add to Wikipedia doesn't violate copyright, I will first carefully read the editing guidelines to ensure my edits comply with the relevant regulations. I will select topics that I am familiar with and have authoritative sources, and I will ensure that the content is either original or appropriately cited. I will avoid directly copying content from other sources and will use material that meets Wikipedia's free licensing requirements. Before editing, I will review the page's edit history to avoid infringing on previous editors' copyrights. Finally, I will follow the review process, respecting the contributions and collaboration principles of other editors, to enhance the quality and credibility of the content. Interesting point Editing Wikipedia differs from HTML editing in that its formatting is subject to rigorous review. Therefore, it's crucial to carefully read the editing guidelines for entries. While external links can b...

W2.1 March 11 — WANG YIHUA

Summary   After reading this piece, my favorite part is Chapter 2, "The Pursuit of the Universal Encyclopedia," specifically "The Index Card and Microfilm," which primarily introduces Vannevar Bush's concept of the memex, considered a precursor to the idea of a universal encyclopedia for individuals. Bush outlined the memex in a 1945 article as a memory extension device, envisioned as an electromechanical microfilm apparatus capable of storing personal books, records, and communications, accessible at high speed and flexibility. Bush predicted the emergence of a new form of encyclopedia that could be stored within the memex and navigated through a series of associative pathways. Furthermore, the background behind the memex is discussed, referring to the internationalist and information science period of the early twentieth century. During this time, significant contributions were made to information organization and access by figures such as Melvil Dewey with...

W1.1 Collective Intelligence in Practice: Understanding Wikipedia: intro to class, blog, wiki and other assignments — WANG YIHUA

Summary     Last semester, I took courses in "Media Trends and Globalization" and "Understanding Small and Big Data with Wikis" taught by Professor. These courses provided me with a deep understanding of Wikipedia, a vast information network maintained by global volunteers. Wikipedia not only serves to assist others but also enriches personal knowledge and experience, while also offering recognition and a sense of achievement within the community. Throughout the learning process, I encountered various challenges, such as why uploaded images were deleted by administrators or why some translated articles were marked as low quality. However, these issues were eventually resolved, giving me a tremendous sense of accomplishment, akin to winning a hard-fought battle. I believe this sense of achievement comes not only from gaining recognition but also from understanding the concepts of the courses, including how to become an outstanding volunteer. Engaging in editing tasks...
