What did I learn while editing Wikipedia?  While editing Wikipedia, I learned many practical skills. I improved my English writing and editing skills, learning how to present information concisely, clearly, and objectively. During my translation work, due to my limited English proficiency, I sometimes relied on translation tools, which are not always accurate. Therefore, I learned to use tools like Grammarly and ChatGPT to correct English sentences and grammar. Additionally, I learned how to find and evaluate reliable references. The original Chinese article I translated was deemed unreliable, so I had to sift through usable references and find relevant articles and professional journals on platforms like WikiScholar. This was a lengthy process and initially very challenging for me. I also learned to collaborate and communicate with other Wikipedia editors. Often, other editors would suggest improvements or delete parts of my edits. Initially, I didn't understand, but later, I enga...

Summary After reading about Wikipedia's "Did you know" project (DYK), I realized the significant role this project plays in showcasing new content and promoting community building within Wikipedia. DYK is not just a simple fun section; its design and operation have clear goals and strict standards, which make it an important part of Wikipedia's main page. The goals of DYK are very clear. It aims to showcase newly created and expanded content, showing readers the continuous development of Wikipedia. Every day, hundreds of new articles are created on the English Wikipedia, and many more are expanded and improved. DYK presents a series of interesting facts ("hooks") to display this new content to readers. This not only increases readers' interest but also enhances their understanding of the wide range of topics covered by Wikipedia. Moreover, DYK is not just about showing interesting facts; it also plays an important role in motivating editors. Whenever an ...

Summary Categorization provides navigation links to Wikipedia pages in the classification hierarchy. By using the basic defining features of a topic, readers can browse and quickly find the page set of topics defined by these features. This article introduces the principles and guidelines for classifying articles and other content from several aspects, including Naming conventions, Creating category pages, Categorizing pages, Sort keys, Category tree organization, Category cleanup templates, Inappropriate categorization, etc. Interesting Point The organization of categories should make subcategories logically conform to the parent category. A project can be in multiple subcategories of its parent class, which demonstrates the flexibility in the system. And subcategories can also have multiple parent categories. So to avoid a closed loop where a category is a subcategory of its subcategories, special attention needs to be paid to maintaining a clear hierarchical structure. Discussion Wh...

Summary On Wikipedia, most articles start as simple stubs and gradually evolve into comprehensive and high-quality entries over time. This blog will outline the different stages of a Wikipedia article's development and provide some tips on how to improve articles at each stage. Creating a New Article:If you want to create a new article, you can use the "Article Wizard" to guide you through the process. First, search Wikipedia to see if a related article already exists. If not, you can start creating your new article. Stubs:If you don't have time to write a full article, you can start with a "stub." Stubs are very short articles that provide just a few sentences about a topic. Follow Wikipedia's style guide, maintain a neutral tone, and avoid personal comments. Use Wikipedia's search function to find related information and reference reliable sources, such as books and academic journals. Developing Articles:Once a stub has enough content, you can remo...

Summary Wikimedia Commons, commonly known as Commons, is a central media repository that provides freely licensed media files for all Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia. This repository includes a variety of media files, such as photos, diagrams, animations, music, and video clips. The name "Commons" comes from the organization "Wikimedia," which manages all Wikimedia projects, and signifies that it is a resource library available for public use. Although Commons hosts a wide range of media content, it does not accept all types of files. For example, mobile applications suitable for teaching or demonstrating concepts are not accepted. If you have media files that meet the criteria and are useful for Wikimedia projects, you can upload them to Commons. The platform organizes and displays media files primarily through "categories" and "galleries." If you wish to use materials from Commons outside of Wikimedia, simply follow the licensing requirem...

5.10 Assignment 2 —— LI MENGRU

Should AI be used to create Wikipedia articis? I don't think AI should be used to create Wikipedia articles. There are many issues with ChatGPT's applicability to Wikipedia. For example, the tone of AI needs to be consistent with Wikipedia's more neutral style. Moreover, artificial intelligence generators can easily contain erroneous information, even referencing non-existent sources and academic papers. So using AI to create Wikipedia articles is very difficult for us because we are not familiar with the risks of large language models.  I think AI can be used as a tool on Wikipedia, for example, Wikipedia has long used automated systems to perform tasks such as machine translation and eliminate destructive behavior. So doing a good job of human supervision is of great benefit to AI's participation in Wikipedia articles. If you want to try creating a Wikipedia article using AI, you can first use the initial text generated by AI as the basic skeleton of the article and p...

5.10 Assignment 1- LI MENGRU

When you search for information, do you prefer to use AI or Wikipedia? Why? I prefer to use Wikipedia to search for information. When I search for more professional and neutral authoritative information, I use Wikipedia. For example, when I want to know the English expression of a relatively vague Chinese word, I will use Wikipedia to confirm the correct way of expression. Or when you want to quickly search for relevant references, you can quickly learn about relevant information through the references in the article. And I believe that the information in Wikipedia will be more reliable than what AI provides, because AI has experienced the phenomenon of fabricating references.

Summary Wikipedia is frequently cited in popular culture, with some people using its openness as a template, while others modify its content in an unconstructive way. Others view it as a personal reference book or compare it to their own intelligence. Sometimes Wikipedia is embedded into character features or games, such as Wikiracing, becoming a symbol in culture. In the Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert coined the new term "wikiality", which defines it as "the truth of consensus.". He sarcastically praised Wikipedia for following his "true philosophy", which states that intuition and consensus better reflect reality than facts. Colbert also believes that repeated media statements may mislead people into believing their authenticity, and believes that reliable sources cited by Wikipedia often do not support significant changes, thus raising doubts about their authenticity. In the fields of art and music, Wikipedia has received recognition and parody in vari...

I obtained the following information by watching the video The Pursuit of the Universal Encyclopedia and History of Wikipedia. Before the Enlightenment, most people were illiterate farmers who did not need to read, write, or engage in serious mathematics. The Enlightenment movement introduced the concept of universal education, prompting people to start going to school, learning, and thinking. The concept of encyclopedias emerged during the Enlightenment era, aiming to collect and disseminate important information from around the world. The modern free culture movement emphasizes the free flow of information, especially through the Internet. Through the Internet, the concept of universal encyclopedia in the 21st century has become possible, solving the limitations faced by traditional encyclopedias. Although many problems have been solved through the Internet, people are still trying to solve more challenges. Some projects similar to the Opinion have been tried for many years, but with...

1. From the comments Paul Youngquist wrote for Synploke in 2011 , it can be inferred that Wikipedia is not just an online reference work, but a dream and community. This view views Wikipedia as a collaborative effort representing the ideal of human collaboration and knowledge sharing. He put the development of Wikipedia in the context of history and culture, from the early encyclopedia to Wikipedia in the Internet era. This historical perspective helps to understand the development trajectory of Wikipedia and its position in the information age. The comments also mentioned the idealistic pursuit of early dreamers to view knowledge sharing and cooperation as means to achieve harmony, as well as the challenges and difficulties faced by Wikipedia in achieving this ideal. Through this comment, I learned that Wikipedia represents a social and cultural phenomenon, an ideal pursuit of shared knowledge and collaboration. At the same time, I also gained an understanding of the historical and te...

1. Summary This chapter summarizes the challenges and ideals faced by Wikipedia. Zeroeth's law suggests that Wikipedia can only be effective in practice, while Ra ú l's law implies that everyone is defining their own rules. Wikifanatics 2007 presented a spherical puzzle metaphor, representing the multilingual collaboration of Wikipedia. The author compares Wikipedia to a global wish, but also points out the difficulties and tensions that exist within it. He hopes to view Wikipedia's ideals with an understanding and inclusive attitude. Goldwyn's Law points out our biases in judging others and ourselves, and Wikipedia faced serious challenges in its first growth stage. Wales called for the establishment of a culture of cooperation to replace a culture of conflict. Although Wikipedia is committed to higher interests, its collaborative culture also faces setbacks, thus requiring better regulation. Technology has played an important role in the development of Wikipedia, but ...

1.Summary The video highlights the breadth and public nature of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a comprehensive encyclopedia, but an online encyclopedia edited by volunteers based on notarized sources. Its content may be influenced by the viewpoints and editing style of volunteer editors. The video mentions that content on Wikipedia may be deleted, especially when it does not comply with Wikipedia's guidelines. Deleting may occur on controversial or controversial content, or when the content lacks notarization. The content of Wikipedia must be based on reliable and notarized sources, such as books, academic journals, newspapers, etc. Chapter 6 discusses some of the concepts faced in pursuing a universal encyclopedia, including openness, civilization, equality, and prudence. Although these concepts may seem simple in abstraction, they become more complex in community practice and discourse. When considering the role and status of leadership, Wikipedia's collaborative culture present...

1.Summary   This article discusses the characteristics of open content communities and provides a detailed description using Wikipedia as an example. The author first uses the term "community" to describe interdependent groups of people who participate in discussions, decision-making, and share some practices that define communities. Then, the author proposes five characteristics of an open content community: open content, transparency, integrity, non discrimination, and non interference. Although some of these features provide clear boundaries, such as copyright licenses for open content and forking ability, other features such as transparency, integrity, and non discriminatory social values do not provide equally clear boundaries. The author emphasizes that exploring these characteristics helps to understand the background and values in community discussions.   The article then provides a detailed introduction to the origins of the free and open source software movement and...

1. Summary After watching the video Understanding Wikipedia Wikis and Internet 2.0, I learned the characteristics of wiki websites and their impact on the development of the Internet. Wikipedia allows users to modify or delete content. The revolutionary nature of wiki websites is that users can read and modify their content, which is very different from the static nature of the Internet in the past. The new Internet philosophy emphasizes the importance of being easy to correct errors and modify content. The Internet has become more dynamic and easy to use. So by patiently creating, we can promote meaningful thematic associations between different pages. We can try and innovate because errors can be easily fixed. Wisdom and collective wisdom can help understand the nature of errors and how to fix them. Media business is an important component of media. Knowledge sharing websites provide a free media library that allows users to use content in various ways without paying fees or being re...

How to make sure content you add to Wikipedia is not a copyright violation?—— LI MENGRU

1.Summary Firstly, we can use as much content as possible that is clearly released under free copyright licenses or is in the public domain. This content is typically available on dedicated free material websites, such as Wikimedia Commons, Pixabay, Unsplash, and others. Doing so can help avoid copyright disputes and ensure that the content we add is lawful. Secondly, if we wish to use others' work on Wikipedia, we must reach out to the copyright holders and request permission. This may require communication with the authors or copyright owners and obtaining written permission or usage agreements. Only after obtaining authorization can we use these works on Wikipedia. Additionally, we can choose to create our own original content and add it to Wikipedia. This not only helps avoid copyright issues but also contributes new and valuable content to Wikipedia. We can generate original content through independent research, interviews, or creation to enrich Wikipedia's information res...
