W1.1 Collective Intelligence in Practice: Understanding Wikipedia: intro to class, blog, wiki and other assignments — WANG YIHUA

Summary

  Last semester, I took courses in "Media Trends and Globalization" and "Understanding Small and Big Data with Wikis" taught by Professor. These courses provided me with a deep understanding of Wikipedia, a vast information network maintained by global volunteers. Wikipedia not only serves to assist others but also enriches personal knowledge and experience, while also offering recognition and a sense of achievement within the community. Throughout the learning process, I encountered various challenges, such as why uploaded images were deleted by administrators or why some translated articles were marked as low quality. However, these issues were eventually resolved, giving me a tremendous sense of accomplishment, akin to winning a hard-fought battle. I believe this sense of achievement comes not only from gaining recognition but also from understanding the concepts of the courses, including how to become an outstanding volunteer. Engaging in editing tasks on Wikipedia helped foster constructive discussions, contribute to knowledge sharing, and develop practical skills and capabilities in Wikipedia editing.


Interesting point

  Wikipedia, as a free platform, has attracted a large number of volunteers willing to edit it. Because everyone has different interests and expertise, some entries may have richer and more in-depth content due to the special attention of certain editors. This diversity and individual passion make Wikipedia a vibrant and delightful knowledge-sharing platform.


Discussion

Wikipedia is an open online encyclopedia that allows anyone to freely edit and update its content. However, this openness also implies the possibility of being exploited by individuals with malicious intentions, turning it into a platform for shaping public opinion. Despite volunteer supervision and maintenance, I believe there is still a possibility of oversight. How can we prevent such an outcome?

Although the platform relies on the supervision of volunteers, there is always a risk of supervision or abuse.
