W1.1 Intro class: intro to class, blog, wiki and other assignments——CHENG SHIYI

1. Summary

I have taken classes from you, the professor, before and have always been interested in Wikipedia, so I chose to take your class this semester regardless. I understand from your introduction to all the courses in the lecture that this semester's Collective Intelligence in Practice course is centered around Wikipedia, which I understand is an encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and that Wikipedia brings together knowledge from around the world. One of the quotes in your course syllabus is that Technocrati's chief technologist says that soon "Wiki-knowledge will be a required job skill." Wikipedia, a non-profit encyclopedic website, is ranked among the top 5 most popular websites in the world, all thanks to a little bit of contribution from volunteers in the world. I see from this that the Collective Intelligence in Practice program understands Collective Intelligence on the Internet through Wikipedia from a sociological perspective. There are many ways to study in the Collective Intelligence in Practice program such as reading, attending lectures, discussions, etc. to earn points. However, everyone has a different way of learning, so I am grateful that you have provided me with many ways to earn credits for all of us. In the process of completing  assignments, it is important to meet  deadlines and not to plagiarize, relying solely on ChatGPT. By learning through the methods provided by the professor, I feel that  students were able to understand the concepts of the Collective Intelligence in Practice course in the classroom, including completing  assignments, and by participating in  editing tasks of the Wikipedia to establish a good discussion with the contributors and share knowledge, and to develop the practical skills and ability of the Wikipedia.

2.Interesting point

I realized that Wikipedia is a non-profit website,  made possible by the contributions of volunteers from all over the world, and  not run by corporations or capitalists from the beginning. It's amazing to me that people trust Wikipedia. Wikipedia's current success is a testament to the collective wisdom and collaborative potential of volunteers around the world.

3.Discussion

Given that Wikipedia is a global platform, could cultural disparities or differing values between countries impact editing on Wikipedia, potentially resulting in conflicts and disputes among contributors? Will there be edit wars over politically sensitive topics?

Comments

  1. I believe that Wikipedia, as a global and open platform, cultural differences and values between different countries may indeed affect individual editing behaviors, leading to conflicts and disputes between volunteers. Despite the fact that these challenges and problems are real, the Wikipedia community has established a series of guidelines and mechanisms that are used to help handle and resolve conflicts and disputes between editors. Examples include discussion pages, editorial guidelines, and arbitration committees, which promote cooperation and negotiation to ensure the quality and credibility of Wikipedia's content.

  3. These words clearly indicate that Wikipedia is not just an encyclopedia, but also a system that can embody collective wisdom. The importance of originality and integrity in learning is also emphasized. At the same time, it also explains the importance of the participation of Wikipedia editors in improving students' abilities. Because of the importance of ability improvement, students can also participate in more discussions, ask questions and share experiences in class, which is also important for classroom atmosphere and improving learning ability.

  4. I believe that the Wikipedia community is committed to neutrality, objectivity, and impartiality, but some editorial disputes and conflicts are inevitable as contributors come from different cultural and political backgrounds. However, through community consensus and cooperation, Wikipedia is usually able to resolve these issues and ensure the quality and accuracy of entries.

  5. It is recommended that Wikipedia adopt a stricter content review mechanism to ensure the accuracy and credibility of its content; strengthen anti-malicious editing measures to protect the integrity and stability of its content; actively attract and cultivate professionals to participate in editing, so as to provide richer, more comprehensive, and higher-quality knowledge content; and, at the same time, advocate for user participation and education, so as to make more people aware of the editing guidelines and rules, and work together to maintain and improve Wikipedia's content to further enhance its value and credibility as a public knowledge resource.

  6. Wikipedia allows anyone to edit its content, which may lead to inaccurate, misleading or subjective information in the entry. Due to the lack of a strict audit mechanism, readers may need to verify the information on Wikipedia.
