 Abstract:

Wikipedia is a quest for the world's encyclopaedia, and its founder, Jimmy Wales, envisioned Wikipedia reaching people without access to the Internet. Behind this ambitious goal is confidence and reliance on technological development and global cooperation. To realize this vision, Wikipedia's founders and other contributors have worked very hard. They go to great lengths to edit, create and maintain Wikipedia's content to ensure it is accessible to everyone, everywhere. Wikipedia's success lies not only in its vast library of content, but also in its spirit of openness, freedom, and collaboration. Through the small contributions of each individual, Wikipedia has grown to become a symbol of collective intelligence.

Interesting points:

The story of Michael Hart in the article I thought was very interesting. As a college student, Michael Hart founded Project Gutenberg in 1971 to provide free e-books. Through a friend, he gained access to the Xerox Sigma Five mainframe computer in the university lab and began typing the text of the Declaration of Independence, which is seen as the genesis of the project. The idea that this is equivalent to a $100 million contribution to the computer library of the next 100 million computer users is interesting. The history of Project Gutenberg, and its impact on digital libraries and online reference resources, has shown me interesting things and lessons to learn about volunteer collaboration, technology selection, and knowledge sharing.

Discussion:

Despite Wikipedia's tremendous success, it still faces some challenges and controversies. One question is how to balance openness and accuracy. The Citizendium project started by Sanger attempted to improve the "Wikipedia model" by providing "reliable" and high-quality content, but encountered some difficulties in practice.
