W2.2 March 15th (Friday) 주영영 ZHUYINGYING
1. summary
This chapter mainly introduces the methods used by sociologists in the study of social life. While not detailing statistics or specific investigative methods, it highlights how sociologists go beyond common sense understanding, questioning why things happen, and trying to prevent problems from happening.Different approaches in epistemology, including authority, experience, logic, tradition, revelation and science, are discussed. In sociology, the scientific method is considered the most important and privileged way, and information about other methods may be rejected without scientific support.
2.Interesting points
What is interesting is that sociologists use not only scientific methods when studying social phenomena, but also positivism and qualitative sociology.Positivism emphasizes explaining and predicting social phenomena through quantitative data and deductive reasoning, while qualitative sociology emphasizes exploring social phenomena through inductive reasoning and understanding of culture or phenomena themselves. Both methods embody the basic logic of science, which is to build an understanding of the social world through observation, assumption, prediction, and testing.
3. Question
Measurement and classification processes in the scientific method and their relationship to scientific research. The details of many scientific methods, including measurements, classifications, operational definitions, etc., can be a bit complicated for beginners.
