W5.1 April 1 (Mon)
1) summarize in your own words of materials you read
First of all, religion in sociology is not an object of evaluation, but an object of study on what to do and what to become. The criteria for defining religion are important. The first criterion presented was sacred versus profane, and the second criterion was religion as an existential question, but both criteria were criticized as being too comprehensive. The third criterion is religion as supernatural, which adheres to the traditional view of what constitutes religion. Religious sect types include churches, denominations, sects, cults, or religious movements. Religion is related to many aspects of society, including gender, race, social class, education, and health.
2) mention of any new, interesting, or unusual items learned
In the material, it is said that women rely on religion more than men. This is because religion emphasized women's submission to God and men and helped developing women's submissive, nurturing, and submissive social roles. This tendency made gender inequality and maintained it. It was interesting that religion, which should be equal for all, paradoxically created and maintained discrimination.
3) identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is either problematic in some respect or could have been elaborated more
In the material, it says that sect is derived from parent religion and mostly made up by lower social-economical class than parent religion. And it can only be dissolved, institutionalized, and develop into a denomination. Can’t it become a church? Why is the denomination the limit of sects?
