 1) summarize in your own words of materials you read;

Deviance is behavior that violates cultural standards. There are two main types of deviance. The first is official deviance, which is like a crime, and the second is informal deviance, which is not a crime but is an act that can cause people to dislike it. Informal deviance may vary across cultures.

There are various theories about deviance.

The first is a physical and biological theory. This suggests that we may have evolved to follow standards in order to fit in with the majority.

There is also a social-strain typology that classifies deviance into five types by presenting two criteria.

Structural functionalism plays an important role in society because deviance can serve as a standard for distinguishing what is acceptable behavior.

2) mention of any new, interesting, or unusual items learned;

It is interesting that the balance of society can be broken due to deviance, that society can change to correct this balance, and that the changed results can fit the goals of people who did deviant behavior.

3) identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is either problematic in some respect or could have been elaborated more.

Labeling theory states that by attaching a label to a behavior, past behavior can be reinterpreted from a current perspective. Can we re-evaluate past behavior by current standards and call their behavior deviant?

Comments

  1. I think it is an appropriate method to evaluate common issues such as ethical issues that are agreed upon worldwide on current standards. However, as the valuation of it changes over time, I feel that it is also necessary to reflect the times and evaluate it.
