Week13.2(5.31Fri)Wikipedia:Categorization (YANGPEIFU)

 1. Summary

The page classification function details how to effectively classify Wikipedia articles so that we can quickly find relevant content. Since classification is complex and time-consuming, it is recommended that novices discuss with the community and develop a classification plan before classification. Classification should use standardized terms, avoid product names, common names, popular words, colloquial phrases and literal translations, and should not mix Chinese and foreign languages, except in special circumstances. Neutrality should be maintained when classifying, and avoid creating empty categories or categories with only one entry. Category names should be concise and standardized, without abbreviations, hierarchies and the word "category". Adding a category is simple. Just link to the category page at the bottom of the entry and add a brief introduction and parent category for the new category. Template classification is automatically applied to entries using the template. When modifying the template, the category list needs to be updated. Categories are arranged by pinyin, surname or logical order to improve readability, and cross-language connections need to be determined through related entries. The classification structure includes vertical classification (select the most appropriate parent category or subcategory) and horizontal classification (classification from different aspects). It is recommended to classify reasonably through taxonomic grouping, functional grouping and mixed grouping to ensure that the entry classification is clear, accurate and practical. Therefore, we novices need to make sufficient preparations to quickly find relevant content or page categories.

2. Project

Creating the category

After you have determined an appropriate category name for the category, next try to find a suitable place for the new category. (For example, categories of people should be in the tree of "people" categories.) Please see #Category tree organization for more information on this.

Once you have determined where to categorize this new category, you should be ready to create the new category. To create a category,

  1. Add a page to the intended category. Do this by editing that page:
    1. At the bottom, add the name of the new category, (e.g.: [[Category:New category name]] )
    2. Save your edit. The as-yet-undefined category name will now appear as a red link in the category list at the bottom of the page.
  2. Next, click on that red link, which brings you to the new category page to create.
  3. Finally, at the bottom of the page, simply add the parent category (e.g.: [[Category:Parent category name]] ), which should usually be a hypernym of the sub-category. This will add the new category into the appropriate parent category.

Nota bene If something goes wrong, double check to see if you followed the steps properly and check if the wikitext is correct. For example, if the category fails to list in the parent category, the wikitext should be [[Category:Parent category name]], not [[:Category:Parent category name]].

I think this section is more important because it emphasizes the need to find the right location before creating a category, ensuring that the new category is placed in the correct tree structure to avoid confusion. And this section provides checking steps and solutions to common errors, which helps reduce the mistakes that novices may make when creating categories.

3.Question

Why do I need to add a parent category at the bottom of the new category page when creating a new category and make sure it is the hypernym of the subcategory?

Comments

  1. When editing Wikipedia, adding a parent category at the bottom of a new category page ensures organizational structure and clarity. The parent category should be the hypernym of the subcategory to maintain logical relationships and enhance user navigation.
