Week15.1(6.10Mon)Understanding Wikipedia: 6.1-6.2 Culture, collaboration, civility(YANGPEIFU)

 1. Summary

Wikipedia, with its vast and diverse community of editors, has developed a rich and intricate culture over its twelve years of existence. This culture not only showcases the rapid development of a complex virtual society but also aids in improving one's editing skills by fostering familiarity and reducing conflicts. Wikipedia's intricate culture, developed over twelve years, emphasizes collaboration, civility, and communication among its vast editor community. Beyond its encyclopedic articles, it includes discussion pages, user pages, policy explanations, noticeboards, and real-time chats. WikiProjects offer support for specific topics, while awards like Barnstars and customizable user pages foster community and recognition. Games and contests encourage engagement, and Wikipedia's impact extends beyond the digital realm into legislation and media. Understanding and participating in this culture enhances editing skills and promotes a respectful, collaborative environment. Wikipedia's culture is deeply rooted in collaboration, courtesy, and mutual respect. This spirit of collaboration is reflected in how editors work together to edit articles, discuss improvements on talk pages, and participate in wiki projects. Civility is of paramount importance, with an emphasis on respectful interactions, kindness, and avoiding personal attacks. This culture of collaboration and respect not only improves the quality of contributions but also fosters a supportive and productive community.

2. Project
In this prescient 2005 talk, Clay Shirky shows how closed groups and corporations will give way to loose networks where small contributors play important roles and fluid collaboration replaces rigid programs.
Clay Shirky argues that the history of the modern world can be seen as a history of how arguments are made, with changes in the media transforming the kinds of arguments that are possible—with profound social and political consequences.
Howard Rheingold talks about the coming world of collaboration, participatory media, and collective action—and how Wikipedia is actually a product of the natural human instinct to work collectively.
Wikipedia even has its own mascot

After redesigning CAPTCHA so that every manually entered response contributes to digitizing books, Luis von Ahn wondered how the small contributions of many people on the Internet could be used for the greater good. In this talk, he shares how his ambitious new project, Duolingo, will help millions of people learn a new language while quickly and accurately translating the web – all for free.
3. Question
